Caught up in the growing craze that is pickleball? Well, grab your paddles and get ready to play because there is plenty of pickleball action to be had on Anna Maria Island. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, there are programs, courts, and more to suit any player’s needs to enjoy pickleball on AMI.

The History of Pickleball

Pickleball was invented in the 1960s by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum when they were looking to unwind with a bit of badminton but didn’t have the right equipment. Instead, the men improvised using ping pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball with a lowered net on the court, and thus the sport of pickleball was born. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the first official rulebook was published, but it wasn’t long after that that tournaments, brackets, and more began to bolster the game’s popularity. Even now, there has been a surge in demand for accessibility to the sport, with over 70,000 members in the USA Pickleball and the Professional Pickleball Association.

Pickleball: How to Play

Pickleball is played either as doubles (two players per team) or singles, with doubles being the most common way to play. The same size playing area and rules apply to both singles and doubles matches.

The Serve

The match begins with a diagonal cross-court serve. Once served, the server’s feet must not touch the court; instead, they must remain outside the extension of the sideline or centerline. If a point is scored, the server switches sides and initiates the next serve. The server continues switching sides until a fault is committed, and then the serve must be passed to the opponent.

Faults

According to USAPickleball.org :

A fault is any action that stops play because of a rule violation.
A fault by the receiving team results in a point for the serving team.
A fault by the serving team results in the server losing their serve or being side out.

A fault occurs when:

A serve does not land within the confines of the receiving court
The ball is hit into the net on the serve or any return
The ball is volleyed before a bounce has occurred on each side
The ball is hit out of bounds
A ball is volleyed from the non-volley zone
A ball bounces twice before being struck by the receiver
A player, player’s clothing, or any part of a player’s paddle touches the net or the net post when the ball is in play
There is a violation of a service rule
A ball in play strikes a player or anything the player is wearing or carrying
A ball in play strikes any permanent object before bouncing on the court

Scoring

Games are typically played to 11 points. The winner must be ahead by 2 points at the end of the game. Points may only be scored by the serving team in traditional scoring. When the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce before returning, and then the serving team must let it bounce before returning, thus two bounces.

After the ball has bounced once in each team’s court, both teams may either volley the ball (hit the ball before it bounces) or play it off a bounce (ground stroke). The two-bounce rule eliminates the serve-and-volley advantage and extends rallies. Rallies are ended when a fault occurs, and the serve must be passed to the opponents.

Lou Barolo Park

The Lou Barolo Park is located on Highland Ave at 4th Street North and features a picnic area, play structure, and pickleball court. This park is conveniently located near the iconic Bridge Street and its pier, making it the perfect spot to start or end your day out on the town.

Holmes Beach City Field

There are two pickleball courts located near the basketball courts in Holmes Beach’s City Field. These courts are non-reservable and available for free play. Please note that the lines are overlaid on a tennis court, and the net is positioned slightly higher than the regulation height. These courts are an excellent place to get in a game or two while visiting the lovely Holmes Beach.

C.V. Walton Racquet Center

Just a short drive to the mainland , the C.V. Walton Racquet Center is part of the fastest-growing community of pickleball players, with state-of-the-art Pickleball Courts located at the G.T. Bray Recreation Center. The facility features 20 pickleball courts, 14 of which are covered and equipped with large ceiling fans to ensure excellent air circulation during the hot summer months. The remaining six courts are open-air.

Reservations for the outdoor courts only can be made six days in advance. To reserve a court, call (941) 742-5973. The reservation line opens at noon. This facility also offers pro shop services as well as lessons.

Fishing on AMI: Frequently Asked Questions

Anna Maria Island is a favorite spot for fishers of all ages and skill levels. The seven-mile-long island is surrounded by some of the most beautiful waters and hosts numerous local species of fish just waiting to be caught.

But first things first, before you start your fishing adventure, an updated Florida fishing license is a must.

Florida Fishing License Laws

Anyone 16 & older planning to fish during their stay will need a fishing license. It is important to note that out-of-state permits are not valid in the State of Florida. There are multiple varieties of fishing liscenses, so it’s essential to plan your trip ahead and know what types of fish you are looking to catch.

Freshwater Fishing License

A freshwater fishing license covers you for your freshwater fishing needs and is required to take or attempt to take native or nonnative freshwater fish.

The prices for a freshwater fishing license are as follows:

Resident Annual: $17.00
Resident Five-Year: $79.00
Non-Resident Annual: $47.00
Non-Resident 3-Day: $17.00

Saltwater Shoreline Fishing License

A shoreline fishing license is also valid for saltwater fishing on AMI from the shoreline or a structure affixed to the shore. This is a no-cost annual license for residents only. This is not valid when fishing from a vessel or a shoreline reached by a vessel. It is also not valid if taking or attempting to take fish by swimming or diving.

A Note to Keep in Mind

As noted on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Website, there are special things to consider when fishing in environments where both freshwater and saltwater fish live.

When you enter estuarine-type areas where salt and fresh water commingle, and fish of both types can be found, the restrictions become less clear. The interpretation of the rule is:

You need either a freshwater, saltwater, or combination license (or appropriate exemption) to take fish (take is legally defined as taking, attempting to take, pursuing, capturing, or killing any fish, or their nests or eggs by any means whether or not such actions result in obtaining possession of such fish or their nests or eggs).
If you use species-specific gear, your license should be appropriate (e.g., freshwater or saltwater) to the species you are targeting.
Otherwise, you need an appropriate license to keep your catch and must immediately release any species for which you are not licensed. License requirements follow the species of fish, regardless of where they are caught. In other words, if you only have a freshwater license and are primarily fishing for largemouth bass or bream (freshwater species) in a river but happen to catch a red drum (a saltwater species), you must immediately release the red drum.

For added convenience, many bait-and-tackle shops and sports retailers (e.g., Wal-Mart just off the island) sell licenses for a small additional fee. Licenses are also available via the Internet or a toll-free call to credit card users for an additional convenience fee.

Golf carts are a popular way to get around Anna Maria Island and are ideal for exploring the entire 7-mile stretch from Holmes Beach to Bradenton Beach. There’s no better way to experience life like a local than by enjoying a leisurely ride to visit boutique shops, search for a new favorite coffee spot , or simply take a trip to the beach than with your very own golf cart rental. Bonus: golf carts are allowed on roads with speed limits of 35MPH and lower, making them one of the easiest ways to enjoy the island during your stay.

Updated Golf Cart Availability for Serendipity Rentals

Unfortunately, our entire fleet of golf carts was destroyed during the recent hurricanes , and we are working diligently to adjust and continue providing the best possible experience for our guests. The change we feel confident in making is supplying a complimentary golf cart for a 5-night or more stay and offering a golf cart for shorter stays at a reduced nightly rate of $100/day. At this time our insurance requires a North American driver’s license and auto insurance so our international guests will not have access to our golf carts.

Here’s how we are handling golf cart arrangements moving forward:

Reservations booked on or after November 1st, 2024, and for stays of 5 days or longer : We will provide either a golf cart or a credit that can be used to book a golf cart with the provider of your choice.
Reservations booked on or before October 31st, 2024 : We will provide either a golf cart or a credit that can be used to book a golf cart with the provider of your choice.
Reservations for less than 5 days : We offer the golf cart at a reduced nightly rate of $100/day, as well as will share a link to book with our preferred providers, who offer discounted rates exclusively for our guests.

Our golf carts are street-legal and require the following:

A signed Golf Cart Waiver,
A valid North American Driver’s License, and
Proof of Auto Insurance.

Currently, our insurance requires a North American driver’s license and auto insurance, so our international guests will not have access to our golf carts.

Important Things to Keep in Mind While Operating a golf cart on AMI

Rules for operating a Golf Cart on the island are as follows:

Abiding by all traffic laws, including seat belts and child safety seats.
Parking only in legally designated areas or spaces.
No reckless driving.
No driving under the influence of alcohol or substances.
No driving on beaches, sidewalks, or bike paths.
No drivers under the age of 21.
The weight limit for four passenger carts is 800 pounds maximum.
The weight limit for six-passenger carts is 1,200 pounds maximum.
Do not go on any road that has a speed limit over 35 mph.

Additional Tips

Be sure to check with the company to confirm the rental age restrictions on their carts. While some companies offer rentals to those 21 and over, many have an age restriction of 25 and up!

Your automobile insurance will be the primary insurance on your rental cart. Any drivers must register with their driver’s license number and hold automobile insurance.

Florida law requires children ages five and under to be secured properly in a crash-tested, federally approved child restraint device.

However, it is essential to remember that not all beaches on AMI have the same access rules.

Beach Rules & Access on the Island

AMI is home to both private and public beaches. Here are some things to remember when planning a day at the beach.

The Bay Side

Biceseted by Pine Ave, this section of AMI is home to luxurious private beaches, often tied to waterfront properties. Be aware of postings and be respectful of your surroundings. Most homes on the Bay Side of the Island own into the water, and they are well within their rights to ask you to leave.

South Shore

Homes found on South Bay Blvd include private beach access with the property. The ocean stretches behind these houses, and while the public can access the water for launch points only, the actual sand beaches are considered private property and are not to be used by the public.

Along North Shore Blvd, beaches are accessible to the public, and you can feel free to take a stroll through the water and enjoy the magnificent views. Some parts of these beaches, where homes are located close to the water, are technically private past the waterline. These beaches are not for sunning or sitting behind the waterline unless you stay in an adjacent property.

Take in a Baseball Game

Maybe you have gotten your cardio in, and you are ready to relax with one of America’s favorite pastimes and take in a game of Baseball. Anna Maria Island is known to be the proud home of MLB Spring Traning, and there is no better place to watch the pros in action than LECOM Park. According to the official MLB website,” LECOM Park was initially built in 1923. It has undergone several significant renovations over the last three decades to provide fans with modern amenities while maintaining the feeling of a classic ballpark. The iconic Spanish mission style façade was constructed during a significant facelift of the stadium in the early 1990s. Lights came about in 2008.”

Even more, renovations came in 2013 through a partnership with the City of Bradenton, Manatee County, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Park is also home to minor league teams, The Bradenton Marauders and The Florida State League.

This beachfront beauty of a cafe has unmatched ocean views and is open to all. While they offer a handful of different amenities and a traditional beach grille fair, the Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe transforms on Christmas. This delectable menu is available to enjoy on a first-come-first-served basis. Takeout, for home dining ( or for your home away from home)is also available to share with your loved ones.

Every Christmas dinner order includes Ham, turkey, corn, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, and stuffing. It is highly suggested that you pre-order your holiday meal ahead of time. All pre-orders can then be picked up on Christmas Day between 12 pm and 3 pm. Don’t forget to bring extra cash to tip the lovely staff working for the holiday.

Pier 22 has received multiple awards, including Travelers’ Choice 2023, Open Table Diners’ Choice 2023, and the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence every year since 2017. Sure to be a hit with everyone at your party, Pier 22 offers a menu crafted for a very special Christmas indeed.

Pier 22 offers scrumptious appetizers like Lamb Lollipops with a dijon rosemary crust & port wine demi-glace or rich escargot in Boursin, wine, and garlic with puff pastry. Show-stopping entree options like the Stuffed Lobster, stuffed with crab stuffing, drawn butter, potatoes, and asparagus, or the roast duckling that features a crispy half duckling slow roasted, with red potatoes and a duck fat gravy. Euphemia Haye

Euphemia Haye is one of our favorite holiday traditions on Anna Maria Island. Holiday dinners are available on Christmas Eve from 4 pm to 9 pm. Hours for Christmas Day are from 2 pm to 8 pm. Along with the ala carte menu, Euphemia Haye also offers a nightly Bavarian Style Roast Goose. They serve the goose in a special giblet gravy alongside potato dumplings and cabbage. Euphemia Hay requires reservations beforehand, but trust us on this one; you don’t want to miss your chance to dine here.

Note: There is a minimum purchase requirement of $125.00 per person that can be used towards food, drinks, desserts, etc.

Lake Manatee State Park

Lake Manatee State Park offers two separate bike paths. The first path is 2.5 miles of smooth pavement that loops around the shore of Lake Manatee, through the natural foliage, and near the rustic beauty of the park’s campsites. The second path runs 2.3 miles through adventurous untamed terrain that takes cyclists through patches of wildflowers, a chance to see wildlife in their natural habitat, and breathtaking views of the lake.

Learning about Red Tide & The "Seaweed Blob"

If you are considering a vacation here on Anna Maria Island, there is a good chance you did a Google search about the area. Two things that have been in the news lately related to our area are Red Tide and a large mass of seaweed. It’s easy to look at headlines and get the wrong impression about the conditions here. Let’s look at some facts that can help you make an informed decision.

What is Red Tide

An algal bloom is sometimes called Red Tide. Interestingly, there isn’t actually a red color to it. The name refers to how it sometimes kills fish. The term “red tide” is used for blooms of any of several species of dinoflagellates. The current bloom is created by Karenia brevis, a marine dinoflagellate commonly found in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

If the concentration is high enough, fish kills may occur. In addition, it is possible that some visitors could experience respiratory irritation.

Where is the Red Tide Bloom

The good news is that the algal bloom currently in the waters near Anna Maria Island is at a moderate level. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission tracks Red Tide and has an up-to-date interactive map you can always check. When viewing the map, keep in mind that most of our luxury vacation homes are located on the north end of the island. In addition, the Ocean Circulation Lab of the nearby University of South Florida has an updated forecast map that you can access here .

Another great resource for planning your beach visits is the Beach Conditions Reporting System operated by Mote Marine Laboratory. This is a one-stop shop for weather, tide, UV, debris and other factors. The report for Anna Maria Island can be found here .

The Seaweed Blob

When we hear the word “blob” is may bring up images of something resembling a lump of gelatin or a horror movie. The so-called seaweed blob is actually a bloom of sargassum seaweed.

The floating mass is actually beneficial when it is at sea. According to the Sargassum Information Hub , “This floating habitat provides food and protection for fishes, mammals, marine birds, crabs, and more. It serves as a critical habitat for threatened loggerhead sea turtles and as a nursery area for a variety of commercially important fishes such as mahi mahi, jacks, and amberjacks.”

It becomes something of a problem if large amounts of seaweed come ashore and aren’t mitigated. Anna Maria Island actively works to keep our beaches clean, using mechanical rakes or heavy equipment if necessary.

Affordable Vacation Times on Anna Maria Island

There really is no bad time to visit Anna Maria Island. The sugar white sands and Gulf waters are enjoyable almost all of the year. We may be a little biased, but we think this is pretty close to paradise. Still, there are times of the year when the island is busier. There are also times when it is not as busy and that is something you may want to know because less busy means more affordable vacation times.

Peak Seasons

January through April is often just referred to as “season” by many locals. These months typically have the highest rate of visitors we see in Florida. Much of that is people visiting our beaches and resorts. Some are seasonal residents that spend their cold weather months here. In either case, these months are often the times when it is most difficult to find vacancies, rental cars, and flights . Since the demand is high, there are rarely any discounts during those times and prices are usually at their peak.

June through mid-August are also peak months. In this case, it’s busy because of families traveling during their children’s summer break from school. Just like the cold months, this is a more expensive time to travel to Anna Maria Island.

Lower Demand Months

The good news is that there are months of lower demand as well. That means you’ll find a broader range of choices for our luxury vacation homes . Flights won’t be as crowded, and rental cars will be more readily available. The months of May, September, and October are some of the best months to look for affordable vacation times. Our rates are normally lower during those months. The first part of November is also a more affordable time.

Holidays

Not all holidays affect vacations the same way. So, let’s look at them differently.

July 4 th and Post-Christmas

These are the busiest time frames of the year and for good reason. How cool would it be to enjoy the 4 ^th of July on the beach right outside of your door, cook out on the grill then watch fireworks over the water? Or spend the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day with family and friends enjoying the warm weather and sand? Those are great times, but if that is part of your agenda, please plan as early as you can. Our rentals fill up fast for those time frames.

Thanksgiving and Christmas

It is probably no surprise to hear that Thanksgiving and Christmas are two very busy holidays. You may not expect to hear that the period between those two holidays offers some of the best deals of the year! Airports Near Anna Maria Island

Visitors from all over the world come to enjoy the beauty of Anna Maria Island. Many of these visitors will arrive in Florida by plane. Although the island doesn’t have its own airport, there are several airports near Anna Maria Island that offer service to the area. Let’s take a look at the four main airports that serve Anna Maria Island: Sarasota-Bradenton International, Southwest Florida International, Tampa International, and Orlando International.

Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport

The closest airport to Anna Maria Island is the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ). SRQ is located just 13 miles south of the island and is serviced by several major airlines, including, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, American, and United, and offers direct flights to several major US cities, including New York, Atlanta and Boston. For our Canadian friends, Air Canada Rouge also flies in direct from Toronto. The airport houses several car rental agencies, so it is easy for visitors to rent a car and drive to the island. Southwest Florida International Airport

Another nearby airport is Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). RSW is located about 85 miles south in Fort Myers. The airport serves several major airlines, including Southwest, Delta, United, JetBlue, Spirit, and others. These airlines offer direct flights to many US cities, including Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Seattle Flights from Toronto can be had with Air Canada Rouge or WestJest, with seasonal service from Montreal and Ottawa respectively. Eurowings provides service to our European friends from Frankfurt airport. Although RSW is further from Anna Maria Island than SRQ, it provides more airline options for visitors. Tampa International Airport

45 miles north of the island is the Tampa International Airport (TPA). This airport is served by several airlines, including United, Southwest, American, JetBlue and Delta. The airport offers direct flights to several US cities, including Philadelphia, Boston, and New York. Tampa International services many international markets, including flights from London, Zurich, Panama City, Toronto, Frankfurt, and the Cayman Islands. TPA is a good choice for our visitors that are looking for a wider range of flight options than SRQ provides. Their website contains information about airlines, parking, and more.

Orlando International Airport

Although it is about 130 miles from Anna Maria Island, Orlando International Airport (MCO) is a good option for many travelers. It is the busiest airport in the state and one of the busiest in the US. This provides travelers with many more options. It is serviced by several airlines, including American, JetBlue, Southwest, Delta, and United. The airport offers direct flights to several US cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, and Baltimore. MCO is serviced by a number of international airlines with direct flights from Europe, Central and South America, and the Middle East. The MCO website has more information.

While MCO is further from the island than the other three airports we’ve mentioned, it’s still a convenient airport near Anna Maria Island, especially for visitors who are flying in from the west coast and international passengers

There are several airports near Anna Maria Island that you can use to get here. The most convenient in terms of distance is Sarasota-Bradenton International, just 13 miles south of the island. Southwest Florida International and Tampa International offer a larger number of flights and more destinations while being relatively close. Orlando International is also a convenient option, especially for those coming to visit us from international locations. No matter how you get here you’re sure to enjoy the beautiful beaches and laid-back atmosphere of Anna Maria Island.

The gulf coast of Florida is world-renowned for its shelling. Sanibel and Captiva Islands, just to the south of Anna Maria, are usually named on any worldwide list. They are also home to the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum . Anna Maria Island, however, is also very highly ranked. There is a Method

Shelling, sometimes called beachcombing, can appear to be just a random walk along the beach. For some, that is the case. More serious collectors schedule their times in accordance with tides. Many of us fall somewhere in between those two points on the scale.

In general, low tide is one of the best times to try your hand at sea shelling. Low tide gives you more area to search for your perfect keepsake. Times after storms are often productive. The best times are low spring tides during a full moon or new moon periods.

Knowing what you are looking for will help too. In any case, one of the fun parts about shelling is that each day brings something new. Each time the tide comes in, it can bring new and different species. Different shells and treasures move differently. While shells are often best found around the area where the sand and water meet, things like shark teeth tend to tumble and will probably be in the water portion.

There are Laws

It’s easy to think that you can pick up anything washing in along the beach, but that may not be the case. In many cases, these are living creatures and their conservation is important. Anna Maria Island is located in Manatee County. According to the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC), “in Manatee County, you may not harvest or possess more than two shells (includes echinoderms such as sand dollars and starfish) containing live organisms of any single species except for oysters, hard clams, sunray Venus clams and coquinas per day.” Some cities, counties or parks may have other rules or laws, so it is a good idea to ask if you are unsure about something.

In addition, there are some protected species. It is prohibited to harvest the Bahama Starfish anywhere in the state. Conch shells are highly sought by collectors, but care needs to be exercised. If the shell contains a live Queen Conch, it can’t be taken. See the FWC website for more information.

Cleaning is Needed

One thing that vacationers sometimes forget is that cleaning the shells may be necessary. You may not notice it right away, but in a few hours, you may start wondering “what is that smell”. It may very well be the result of your sea shelling adventure. Before just sticking them in a Ziploc bag and putting them in your luggage, consider cleaning them. It’s pretty easy. Christmas Day will be here sooner than you think. Planning ahead is always a good idea. If your Christmas plans do not include cooking, then we have some information you may find useful. Here are some local restaurants that can help you feed your hungry family on Christmas. It may be helpful to bring cash to tip those who will be serving you on the holiday.

AMI Beach Café

The Anna Maria Island Beach Café will be open on Christmas Day. Their breakfast menu is available from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. The dinner order includes ham, turkey and traditional trimmings including corn, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, and stuffing (trimmings may vary). You can pre-order on the website . The café points out that seating will be first-come, first served. The AMI Beach Café is located at 4000 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach, FL 34217.

Euphemia Haye

If your idea of Christmas dinner involves fine dining, Euphemia Haye may be exactly what you are looking for. They will serve a full menu on Christmas Eve from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and on Christmas Day from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A special dish for the holiday is Bavarian-Style Roast Goose dinner – Sliced roasted goose with giblet gravy served with a German potato dumpling and sweet & sour red cabbage. There is an extensive wine list to be enjoyed in the quaint cottage ambiance. Upstairs, diners will find the Haye Loft, an upscale lounge and dessert room. Columbia Restaurant

This Spanish restaurant has a location in nearby Sarasota and gives you the opportunity to add a little international flair to your Christmas dining. They are open from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm on Christmas Day and will serve their normal dinner menu. In addition, the Columbia is offering two specials of the day. First is Lechon Asado, roasted pork marinated with sour orange juice, garlic, oregano and bay leaves. Second is a traditional baked, sugar-glazed Virginia ham dinner. CrossFit Anna Maria

If CrossFit is your choice for workouts, then CrossFit Anna Maria (CFAM) is for you. CFAM offers both day passes, and week passes at $20 and $65 respectively. AMI Health and Fitness offers a number of options to workout on vacation starting with 1 day passes for $12. A week pass is only $45. The gym is staffed from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm on weekdays and until 2:00 pm on weekends. However, those purchasing a 3-day pass or more can get a key card that allows for 24-hour access. Aside from the normal equipment, you would expect in a gym, AMI Health and Fitness offers Fitness on Demand. The Center of Anna Maria Island

Fitness is just one of the things you can do at the Center of Anna Maria Island. The Center offers individual day passes for $20 and weekly passes for $60. You can also purchase family passes for $55 and $175 respectively. The passes give you access to the fitness center, fitness and wellness classes, tennis and pickleball courts, open gym and the playground. The Fitness Center offers a weight room with the equipment to maximize your workout, including elliptical machines, treadmills, stationary bikes, free weights, and an all-in-one weight machine. Anna Maria Island is beautiful and both residents and visitors love to walk our beaches and explore the island. While many things are within walking distance, not everything is. In those instances, the Island Trolley could be a great answer to your needs.

What is the Island Trolley?

The Island Trolley is a bus service offered by the Manatee County Area Transit (MCAT). These air-conditioned trolleys are free of charge and run on continuous looping routes on Anna Maria Island 365 days a year.

How does the Island Trolley work?

Several trolleys continuously loop routes on the island. Riders can travel from Coquina Beach on the southern tip of Bradenton Beach up to the City Pier in the City of Anna Maria on the island’s northern end. There are 35 northbound stops and 35 southbound stops, making the trolley a great way to reach any part of the island. Because there is no charge, riders can hop on and hop off at any stop, as often as they want! There are few places on the island where you are more than two to four blocks from a stop.

What is their schedule?

Trolley service begins at 6:00 am and the trolleys start from both ends of the loop. The trolleys then run at 20-minute intervals until 9:00 pm. They then run at 30-minute intervals until 10:30 pm. Please note that traffic or weather can make those times vary. But don’t worry, they’re coming!

Bicycles welcome!

We hope you take the bikes that are included with your luxury vacation home out to explore the island. If you are out riding and the weather decides not to cooperate or you find you went a little further than you planned, we have good news! The Island Trolley has a bike rack on the front that will accommodate single-seat, two-wheeled bikes 16 inches or larger.

There’s an app for that!

MCAT provides a free app that will help you find the nearest trolley stop. It will even tell you where the trolley is in real-time and how long it will be before it gets to your chosen stop. Android users can get the app at the Google Play Store and iOS users can visit the Apple Store . Once you have it installed, select Manatee County as the transit authority and then pick the trolley route.

For those who don’t want to install the app, the stops all have a QR code you can scan using your phone that will tell you the estimated arrival time of the next trolley. You can also call MCAT at 941-749-7116 during their regular business hours, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday, for real-time information on the trolley.

The Wildlife of Anna Maria Island

Your stay in one of our luxury vacation homes could involve a lot of different things. It could be nightlife and live music or it could be upscale dining . There is also a good chance that while you are exploring the island, you will see wildlife. Some of it may seem familiar to you and some may not. Here are a few things you might see while staying on the island.

Dolphins

Let’s get this one out there right away. Everyone loves dolphins. Whether they are playing in the wake of a boat or just slipping through the water, they just always seem to be having fun. Even their beak looks like a perpetual little smile. If you are out on the water, using the paddleboard or kayak that comes with your vacation home, there is a good chance you will see one of these mammals. There are several kinds that live in the Gulf of Mexico, but the most common is the bottlenose dolphin. As fun and playful as they are, it’s important that you don’t try to feed them.

Alligators

Many visitors come to Florida and expect to see alligators. That’s not unreasonable because they are quite common in the state, but not on Anna Maria Island. Alligators prefer freshwater, and the island isn’t conducive to their lifestyle. However, if you do want to see alligators, you can take a quick trip to nearby Myakka River State Park . Between the boardwalks and river tours, you’re very likely to see some of these living dinosaurs.

Raccoons

There is a good chance you will see raccoons during your trip. There are few predators on the island that they need to fear. These sometimes playful-looking creatures are curious, but they are not something to be played with. They can be aggressive and can carry diseases. Like all wildlife, it’s best to not try to feed them and just watch at a distance. Mostly nocturnal, raccoons are omnivores, meaning they eat pretty much anything from plant to animal, and are quite intelligent. It’s not uncommon to see them around trash cans and dumpsters, lending to their nickname of “trash pandas”.

Pelicans and seagulls

Pelicans and seagulls are common sights on the island. Often you can find pelicans around piers and boat docks, hoping for a free meal from fishermen and boaters. You can also see them diving into the Gulf as they fish for dinner. Seagulls will be found anywhere there might be food. The beach, docks, outdoor restaurants. They’re rarely afraid of people and can be pretty assertive about going after food, sometimes even off your table if you don’t pay attention. As entertaining as you may find seagulls, it’s best not to feed them because it will bring more. A lot more. You may quickly find yourself moving to a different spot on the beach.

Sea turtles

Depending on the time of year, it is possible to see sea turtles on the beach. Florida has five species of sea turtles in her waters, including leatherbacks. Florida is the only place in the continental United States where they nest. Turtles are protected and endangered. Please be careful to never touch or interact with them. However, the water temperature can get down to the chilly 50-60 degree range, especially early in the morning! However, if you find yourself caught in a rip current, there are some tips to follow to stay safe:

– Focus on treading water and waving for help. When you feel yourself coming out of the current, swim parallel to shore. Once you are outside of the rip current, swim straight back to shore.

Red Tide

Red tide is a harmful algal bloom that has a higher-than-normal concentration of microscopic algae. While red tide occurs naturally in Florida, conditions can become more severe causing the bloom to grow. Factors like human-contributed nutrients and nutrient pollution contribute to the severity of the bloom. These blooms typically turn the Gulf water into a red or brown hue. However, the water can remain its normal color during a bloom, which can be deceiving for beachgoers.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission updates its site with a red tide status report each Wednesday and Friday. They also have an interactive map that represents the most recent 8 days of sampling for Karenia brevis.

Sun Exposure and Protection

In Florida, even during the winter the sun is very strong. Even if it’s a cool 60 degrees with a few clouds, you’ll want to make sure your skin is protected. SPF 15 is recommended for daily use to protect from the sun’s UV rays. If you’re planning a day at the beach, up the SPF to 30 and reapply often to reduce chance of sunburn.

As a good rule of thumb, if your skin begins to burn, you should head inside for the day. Following these tips will help protect you from sunburns and sun poisoning.

Red tide raises some concern for travelers heading to the sunshine state come late summer and early fall. Regardless of where you are in Florida, when the news mentions red tide, it’s paramount to know exactly where the bloom is and where it could be heading.

For those who have never seen or experienced ride tide, you might be wondering what exactly it is. Here are some important answers to common questions about red tide on Anna Maria Island.

What is red tide?

What makes red tides harmful?

– Red tides produce toxic chemicals that negatively affect both marine organisms and humans.

– Karenia brevis is a ride tide organism most common in Florida. This species produces brevetoxins that affect the

central nervous system of fish and other vertebrates, which causes them to die, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission .

When vacationing at the beach, most people look forward to sights of sugary sand and bright blue water. However, these sights are not the only thing you can see at the beach. Perhaps one of the most incredible parts of a beach vacation is the animals you may see at the beach.

Jellyfish

Jellyfish are some of the most fascinating animals you can see at the beach. They use their long tentacles to sting their prey. Usually, they drift along with the current. However, you can occasionally see them swimming in a sort of pulsing motion.

Jellyfish have no lungs or gills. Their bodies are so thin that oxygen can pass through uninhibited. Similarly, carbon dioxide passes out of jellyfish’s bodies the same way.

While jellyfish don’t have many enemies to fear, some other fish may nibble on them. Sea turtles may even eat them entirely.

Stingray

Stingray season in Florida is from April until October. However, stingrays can be present at any point during the year.

Stingrays camouflage themselves in the sand. Therefore, it’s possible to step on them when walking around in the water. If a stingray is stepped on, its tail will shoot upward and drive a barb into a foot or leg.

Stingray stings aren’t typically deadly, but they can be very painful. If you’re stung by a stingray, you should seek immediate medical attention. Don’t stop the bleeding, as this helps to flush out venom. Soaking the wound in hot water may help to relieve pain.

Stingray Shuffle: To avoid a sting from a stingray, Floridians like to do what is called the “Stingray Shuffle.” Walking with this technique alerts stingrays of your presence and reduces your chance of being stung.

Rather than lifting your feet and setting them back down to walk, simply shuffle your feet along the ocean floor. As you do this, your feet will push up small mounds of sand. These mounds of sand will bump any hiding stingrays, causing them to swim away before you step on them.

Portuguese Man-of-War

While it may look like a jellyfish, the Portuguese Man-of-War – also called a “Blue Bottle” – is actually not a jellyfish! Rather, it’s a colony of multiple organisms working together called a siphonophore.

You may see a Portuguese Man-of-War washed up on the beach. It looks like a small purple or blue balloon.

Similar to jellyfish, the Portuguese Man-of-War stings. While the sting is rarely deadly to humans, it’s very painful. It’s important to remember that you can be stung by a dead one, too, so don’t touch the ones you find washed up on the beach!

Dolphin

A trip to a Florida beach isn’t complete without a dolphin sighting or two.

The bottle-nose dolphin, often mistaken for a shark by beachgoers, frequently passes through waterways close to shore. However, dolphins usually travel in groups called pods or schools, so you’ll usually see more than one.

These dolphins can swim up to 20 miles per hour. They use echolocation to communicate, talking to each other with a series of loud clicks. Since dolphins usually eat small fish or shrimp, they can often be found following fishing boats around.

If you’re lucky, you may be able to see a dolphin breach. A bottle-nose dolphin is capable of jumping 16 feet out of the water!

Manatee

Manatees, often called sea cows, are endangered animals. They can be found in many of Florida’s waterways, including coastal waters and rivers.

Although large, manatees are surprisingly graceful. They typically cruise through the water at a meandering 5 miles per hour but can swim up to 15 miles per hour when necessary.

If you keep a watchful eye, you may be able to spot a manatee while kayaking or paddleboarding. Usually, it’s just their mouth and nose visible above the water. They have to come to the surface to breathe and can’t be submerged for more than 15 minutes at a time.

Because manatees are endangered, they are protected by law. Sadly, many manatees are still injured by boaters not following the rules. It’s important to pay attention to “no-wake zones” when boating to minimize the chance of injuring a manatee with your boat propeller.

Sea Turtle

Although rare, the sea turtle is another of the fascinating animals you may see at the beach. However, it’s much more likely that you will see a sea turtle nest on the beach.

During nesting season , typically March, April, or May through October, you may see areas of the beach roped off. These roped off sections are sea turtle nests, full of eggs. Each year, the eggs hatch and the baby sea turtles make their way to the ocean. If you’re fortunate enough to witness this, it’s a truly magical experience.
